How do you determine the value of an item?
It depends on the type of item that is being appraised, but since everyone who works at Shannock's Pawn has their own niche and area of specialty, our appraisal process is extremely streamlined. Gold and other precious metals are appraised based on the current market value, and we have a multitude of resources at our fingertips to help us determine an item's value, whether you are pawning or selling. We also have of experience in this business which gives us a good eye for determining the value of an item, often times right on the spot.
How do you decide how much to offer on a loan, or to pay on an item?
We lend and buy based on the current resale value of an item, and we determine that value based on a few different factors:
The age of the item
The desirability of the item in the current market
How quickly the item will depreciate in value
For example, computers and video game systems depreciate very quickly with the advent of newer technologies. Even if you paid $900.00 for a computer 5 years ago, it will not be worth that much today. All of those factors are taken into consideration before offering a loan to a customer or buying an item to resell in our showroom.
