In 1966 Shannock's Clothing opened its doors in a small shopping center located in King, NC. The clothing store faithfully served the local community for nearly three decades until Mike Ernst, along with his father, decided to close the clothing store, and reopen it as a pawn shop. It would be the first pawn shop ever in King, NC. A public opinion poll was published in the local newspaper to get the feedback of the community before setting up shop. With no negative responses, Shannock's Pawn opened to the public in March of 1992.
A lot of folks think that Mike's last name is Shannock, and considering the family heritage of the store, some even refer to him as Shannock Jr.. The name doesn't have any roots in his family ancestry, though. The Shannock's name originated with Mike's father. He was ordering most of the clothing for his store out of New York City. When it came time to open the store, he wasn't sure what to call it. So he pulled out a New York City phone directory and saw the word "Shannock". The name stuck with him, and that's what he decided to call his store. The name, and the location in King, stuck around. And Shannock's, in one form or another, has been a part of the community for .
When Shannock's was reborn as a pawn shop, it was just that: a pawn shop. Over time it grew to be more than just pawn, in fact over 50% of the business is now music related. Thus the addition of 'Music' to Shannock's company name. With branching out into music came branching out into other services as well.
